Nice Product Saved My Content

I faced the ultimate nightmare just a few days ago, discovering that my 500GB Maxtor storage drive had become corrupted (and of course no current backup existed!). I used CHKDSK utility and it failed to fix the problem, which was at the file level and not the MBR. I ran OnTrack's Easy Recovery Tool and it failed to find any files on the affected disk, which showed up as "healthy" but with 0 bytes of data in the Windows Computer Management console.

After some searching through Google I came across this product. Skeptical at first, I downloaded the demo version which installed quickly, ran without any need to configure the tool, and found over 60,000 files. Since the demo version had a disabled "save" feature, but I could tell it had the ability to find the missing data, I promptly bought the software at a bargain price of $69. Once again I ran the utility, found the same number of files, and ran it to ultimately save over 45,000 files to a good drive on my system.

Advantages: The cost definitely is well worth it, if you factor in the expense of having someone else recover the data or the sheer time involved in recreating missing files from prior backups or other sources. I would have paid twice the price if it came with a guarantee. The user interface is clean and easy to understand, and the save options give you the ability to basically back up to any mounted drive. A visual counter showed the total sectors searched, total files recovered and the percentage of completion. I did not try to find a network drive so I can't tell you if that was an available option.

Cons: The buttons are not marked, so I guessed at their function. I later found that the included help file displays the button icons and explains their purpose. I recommend that for anyone using this utility you read the help file first. I also wasn't given any indication of what steps the utility would take, or how long the process might last during the indexing of the bad drive. A nice add on feature would be a status bar showing the percentage complete of the entire backup process, although admittedly time isn't the most important factor in trying to restore a fragged hard drive.

I would definitely recommend this product, and look forward to seeing other offerings from this developer.
